Jenn Saussol, a dedicated third grade teacher at Memorial Elementary School and mother of two daughters (Adelina, 12, and Ella, 10), has added another title to her impressive repertoire—children's book author. Saussol recently self-published her book titled "Cloud Wishes," a delightful journey designed for children aged 2-8, available through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).
The inspiration for "Cloud Wishes" sprouted from a profound moment with her daughter Ella as they strolled during a summer day. Ella shared her innocent perspective, saying, "I like to think that the clouds are just pictures of the wishes of all the children of the world." This enchanting sentiment sparked the creation of a book that aims to capture the whimsical and imaginative essence of childhood.
Saussol admitted that finding time to pursue her dreams became a challenge amidst the busyness of life. However, the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic became the catalyst for her to finally bring her dream to life.
The writing process, although challenging, became an invaluable learning experience for Saussol. Determined to maintain a whimsical, child-like feel, she opted for rhyming and recognized the pivotal role illustrations would play in conveying the book's themes. Collaborating with her daughters, Saussol sought to see the story through a child's lens, making the process not only challenging but also rewarding.
Drawing inspiration from children's author Kay Winters, who once told a group of students Saussol was with, "Anyone can be an author. If you want to write a book, just pay attention," Saussol encourages aspiring writers to be observant, as ideas are all around us.
The book's creation took approximately three years, from conceptualization to print, with Saussol wearing multiple hats, from writing to illustrating. Reflecting on the journey, Saussol confessed, "The whole process was weird and uncomfortable but also exhilarating. I felt very vulnerable but also proud."
Despite the challenges, Saussol's dedication to her craft remained unwavering. During a bout with COVID-19 over Christmas, she found solace in completing her work. While aimed at young children, the book carries universal themes, as Saussol believes it can transport readers back to a time when hopes and dreams were paramount.
Saussol has already shared her creation with her students, igniting their creativity as they began writing their own books. She emphasizes the importance of paying attention to the world around us, echoing the words of Kay Winters that anything can become a story.
As Saussol looks ahead, she contemplates ideas for future books and the possibility of exploring traditional booksellers. For now, "Cloud Wishes" stands as a testament to the power of dreams and the magic that unfolds when one listens to the whispers of inspiration in everyday life.
