Mrs. Melinda Romito, a Neil Armstrong Middle School teacher, has been recognized by the National State Teachers of the Year - Pennsylvania Chapter with the Apple Award. This award is presented to Pennsylvania educators for exceptional teaching, coaching, and other efforts supporting educational excellence. It recognizes members of the academic community who make a positive difference in the lives of students, school districts, and the community.
Mrs. Romito was nominated for the award by her colleague, Ms. KD Meucci, who cited Romito’s ability to ignite her student’s passion for learning as the reason for the nomination.
“[Mrs. Romito] strives to create a welcoming classroom where students are excited to and engaged in meaningful learning,” said Meucci. “She celebrates students’ individuality, encourages them to do their best, and allows students to take risks as learners daily.”
Romito and Meucci became acquainted while piloting the new reading curriculum, Amplify CKLA. As part of the pilot, Romito set up a mock courtroom in her classroom where students participated in a trial for the Don Quixote unit. According to her nomination, Romito’s students were delighted to walk into the Language Arts classroom and find their principal, Mrs. Lisa Miracle-Volpe, dressed as a judge.
“She regularly makes learning come alive for her students,” said Meucci.
